Washington DC tem muito para ver e descobrir. Dos cerca de 15(?) museus, visitámos três. No museu da história americana conseguimos aculturar-nos através exposições tão variadas como a da evolução da comida, os transportes (apenas com uma bicicleta num cantinho) ou os presidentes americanos. Também vimos os sapatinhos da Dorothy, do filme O Feiticeiro de Oz, ou o primeiro sapo Cocas, no fundo, objectos que também fazem parte da nossa própria cultura.

O Pedro adorou o museu de história de natural, embora seja de notar que o de Londres é um bocadinho melhor. Ainda assim, o ponto alto das visitas foi o Museu do Ar e do Espaço. Desde uma exposição dedicada aos irmãos Wright, até aos drones dos nossos dias, está lá toda a história da aviação, os primeiros pioneiros, as guerras mundiais, a corrida ao espaço, uma pedra lunar, os mísseis da guerra fria e a aviação comercial. É possível ver cockpits, cabines de naves espaciais, tocar numa parte da lua, perceber a história da observação dos céus e aprender sobre a corrida ao espaço entre a União Soviética e os Estados Unidos.

Quando dizíamos que íamos a Washington DC toda a gente nos falava dos museus e a verdade, é que valem mesmo a pena!

Outra tipicidade desta capital são os diversos memoriais. Para a nossa percepção portuguesa, não deixa de ser um pouco estranho haver tantos edifícios, estátuas, esculturas ou pedras dedicadas à memória de pessoas e eventos. Ainda assim, não deixam de ser uma boa forma de aprender sobre determinados períodos da história, como a II Guerra Mundial, ou a guerra do Vietname, ou suscitar a curiosidade sobre os mais amados presidentes norte-americanos, como Lincoln, Jefferson e Roosevelt ou sobre o utras ersonalidades como oMartin Luther King Jr. Ao contrário do que observamos nos dias que correm, estas eram pessoas movidas por ideais e que aceitavam os cargos com um espírito de serviço à nação e ao povo (ou pelo menos é deste modo que a história se recorda delas).

Ora, já vai esta descrição longa o suficiente, por isso atalhemos então para os restantes sítios visitados, que não são assim tantos, a Biblioteca do Congresso, o Supremo Tribunal de Justiça (curiosidade de advogada), toda a zona do Mall, o Capitólio e a Casa Branca (só por fora), Adams Morgan e ruas e avenidas da fantástica cidade de Washington.

Washington DC has a lot to see and discover. We saw three of the fifteen (?) museums. At the american history museum we were able to learn about such different subjects such as the evolution in food, transportation (only one bicycle in a little corner) or the american presidents. We also saw Dorothy’s shoes from the movie The Wizard of Oz and the original Kermit, these are also objects that are part or our own culture.

Pedro loved the Natural History Museum, even tough the one in London is a little bit better. Still, the visits highlight was the air and space museum. Since an exhibition dedicated to the Wright brothers to nowadays drones, the aviation history is all there, the pioneers, the world wars, the space run, a moon rock, the cold war missiles and the commercial aviation. Its possible to see cockpits, air space cabins, touch in a piece of the moon, understand the history of sky observation and to learn about the space run between the Soviet Union and the United States.

When we told people that we were going to Washington DC everybody told us about the museums and the truth is that they are worth the trip.

Other typical thing about this capital are the diverse memorials. In our portuguese perception, is a little weird the amount of buildings, statues, sculptures or rocks dedicated to the memory of people and historical events. Still, they seem to be a good way to learn about certain historical periods like the II World War or the Vietnam War, or to stimulate the curiosity about the most beloved american presidents like Lincoln, Jefferson or Roosevelt and also about other personalities like Martin Luther King Jr.

Unlike nowadays, this seem to be people moved by ideals, that took their jobs to serve the nation and the people (or at least that’s how history remembers them).

This description is long enough, so is time to take a shortcut and mention the other places that we visited, like the Congress Library, the Supreme Court (lawyer curiosity), the Mall, Capitol Hill and the White House (on the outside), Adams Morgan neighborhood, and the streets and avenues of this amazing city.
