Compras e lavagem da roupa tratada. Visita ao Starbucks para actualização da internet. Alforges organizados e quarto arrumado (um dia fazemos um post a explicar a dificuldade de manter arrumada a bagagem que transportamos em 14 volumes diferentes), e estava na hora de nos metermos ao caminho para passear pela cidade.

Desta vez a escolha recaiu no distrito financeiro, localizado na parte meridional da ilha, a mesma onde se localizava o World Trade Center. Pareceu-nos ser uma zona exclusivamente de negócios, com pouca habitação e que fica um pouco deserta depois das cinco da tarde. Ainda assim, os prédios são altos, a construção da nova torre está bastante avançada e vêm-se bastantes turistas a visitar o memorial do 11 de Setembro. Mesmo na ponta de Manhattan apanha-se o ferry para Staten Island (grátis) e para a Estátua da Liberdade (não grátis). Como estava um vento tremendo terá que ficar para a próxima visita.

Assim, depois de vermos a rua do capitalismo, a Wall Street, não a Quinta Avenida, decidimos caminhar até à Ponte de Brooklin de onde se podem observar todos os arranha-céus da baixa nova-iorquina. Aliás, caminhar é mesmo o que mais temos feito nestes dias. Assim sempre variamos da bicicleta!

Shopping and laundry – done. Visit to Starbucks to update on internet business -done. Panniers duly organized and bedroom cleaned – done. (One day we will write a post about the difficulty of keeping tidy all the luggage we transport in 14 different pieces). It was now time to walk in the city. This time the choice was upon the financial district, located in the southern part of the island, the same where World Trade Center used to be.

It looked like a business district, with few places to live, and that after five pm turns into a desert place. Even so, the buildings are really tall, the construction of the new tower is pretty well advanced and one’s get to see a lot of tourists visiting the 9/11 memorial.

In the southern tip of Manhattan its possible to take the free ferry to Staten Island and the not so free ferry to the Statue of Liberty. Since the weather was not so good we have to keep our visit to the next time we go to NYC.

After we saw the capitalism street, and we mean Wall Street, not Fifth Avenue, we decided to walk to the Brooklyn Bridge, from where we could watch all the skyscrapers of New York downtown. In fact, walking is what we have mostly done these days. At least its different than cycling!
